The force behind SOHO GEM’S success is the dynamic partnership of sisters Maria Benavides and Irina Ferry. Descended from a heritage of fine art, antiques and jewelry, they learned the family business along the side of their parents; collecting, buying and selling one-of-a-kind pieces. The synergy of their talents, passion, and business sense has made SOHO GEM an established landmark in New York's fine jewelry arena for many years.
SOHO GEM, established in 1998, opened its doors in SoHo, the hot downtown shopping Mecca of Manhattan. With a unique selection ranging from delicate, feminine designs to colorful dramatic creations, the appeal was instant. A swift expansion included a second outpost on Madison Avenue and the creation of a successful online boutique that brought SOHO GEM’S collections to devoted customers all over the globe.
SOHO GEM quickly carved out a niche in the bridal market by offering extraordinary custom hand-made engagement rings and delicate wedding bands to the most discerning brides. With extensive diamond expertise and an in-house gemologist, SOHO GEM established itself as an authority on the complete customer service experience from stone selection to custom design by Irina Ferry. An approach that placed emphasis on education was key in converting the diamond-buying experience from intimidating to enjoyable for customers at every budget level.
SOHO GEM launched a new venture in 2013 with the creation of the Gemstone Boutique – a selection of handmade pieces featuring extraordinary colored stones purchased with Irina’s experienced and discriminating eye. In an effort to connect more directly with the source, SOHO GEM established a partnership with a mining company in Madagascar, and became directly engaged in the selection of the rough material, the cutting, and the polishing of the stones. Maria and Irina felt strongly that they be sourced directly from the mines and purchased at fair market prices, thus benefiting the local economy of this mineral-rich yet remarkably poor country. “Working directly with the miners gives us accessibility and an advantage over most jewelry stores. We can now bipass the middle man and bring high quality gems to our customers in a boutique experience.” Says Irina.
SOHO GEM'S mission is to treat their customers the way they themselves would like to be treated. Educating and passing on knowledge about diamonds, gemstones, gold, fashion, and investment is a priority. “Our customer’s experience is what we value most.
